UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM

The B.S. in Geology at Radford University provides students with an outstanding framework for a professional career in the field of Geology, for graduate studies in Geology, or for licensure to teach earth and space science.  Classes are small, allowing for individualized instruction, and each student is advised by a faculty member in the Department.

All Geology Majors are required to complete two categories of courses --

1) CORE COURSES (Required for all geology Majors), and

2) Required courses for one of the three new CONCENTRATIONS

These three Concentrations are --

a) GENERAL GEOLOGY CONCENTRATION

b) ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENGINEERING GEOSCIENCE CONCENTRATION, and

c) EARTH SCIENCES CONCENTRATION WITH TEACHING CERTIFICATION

REQUIRED CORE COURSES

GEOL 100. Earth Resources and Natural Hazards.

GEOL 105. Exploring Earth.

GEOL 106. The Earth Through Time.

GEOL 311. Mineralogy.

GEOL 312. Petrology.

GEOL 440. Structural Geology.

GEOL 441. Geologic Field Methods.

In addition, each geology major will choose, and fulfill all requirements in, at least one of the following three concentrations:

REQUIRED COURSES FOR THE "GENERAL GEOLOGY CONCENTRATION"

GEOL 305. Professional Skills in Geology.

     GEOL 320. Sedimentation and Stratigraphy.

     GEOL 335. General Paleontology.

     GEOL 261. Geology of Virginia

            or

     GEOL 360. Oceanography.

            or

GEOL 461. Regional Geology of the United

            States.

     GEOL 406. Geophysics.

GEOL 408. Spatial Data Applications in

          Geology.

GEOL 455. Principles of Engineering Geology.

     GEOL 474. Hydrogeology.

     ITEC 100

REQUIRED COURSES FOR THE "EARTH SCIENCES CONCENTRATION"

     GEOL 261. Geology of Virginia.

             or

     GEOL 365. Oceanography.

             or

GEOL 461. Regional Geology of the United

             States.

     ITEC 100

     MATH 140 or MATH 151

     PHYS 301

BIOL 105 or CHEM 101 or ASTR 112 or GEOL

     EDUC 442

     EDUC 452

Required for a B.S. Degree  with "Earth

     Sciences Concentration":

     PHYS 111

     ASTR 111

Please also note that in effect from Fall, 2005 -

  • GEOL 101 Exploring Earth becomes GEOL 105 Exploring Earth (course number change only)

  • GEOL 103 Environmental Geology becomes GEOL 100 (Earth Resources and Natural Hazards)

  • GEOL 100 and GEOL 105 may be taken in any order as neither have prerequisites, however, GEOL 105 (Exploring Earth) is still a prerequisite for GEOL 106 (The Earth Through Time).

  • All three of these courses (GEOL 100, 105 and 106) will be required of all geology majors and minors.

  • For students entering Radford University in the Fall of 2005, or thereafter, ITEC 100 will be a prerequisite for GEOL 305 (Profession Skills in Geology)

You may graduate under any catalog in affect since you entered Radford University and not over 5 years old, so these changes do not necessarily affect you.

** General Education Requirements:
In addition to the major requirements, students pursuing a B.S. in Geology must also meet all general education requirements of Radford University.
